catch a swan

Not nearly as funny as Shaun of the Dead, not entiry convincing, but one clever piece of entertaining comedy action flick! And nicely edited, Chris!

It may have the feel of a little town all over it, but then it does take place in a small village… There are some brilliant moments here, even if it is bleedingly obvious we’re not in Hollywood.

Something about this reminds me of Kenny Everett’s Bloodbath at the house of Death (which I have to find, because I really want to see it again). I might want to see Ru, Fat Boy, Run now. Although I do have the feeling these guys are going steady down hill after Shaun. At least it must’ve been fun doing the fuzz. It certainly is fun watchin’ it! Hot Fuzz

The makers of this film have seen a film or two, so perhaps there’s a couple things to spot for all sorts of film buffs… 😉 So hardly deep or even genius, but possibly enough for you to have a glued smile on your face for a couple of minutes after the credits have finished. That’s a positive review, just to make myself clear.

fraggin’ your way through a movie…

shoot em up

first of all – don’t go see this movie. And don’t rent the dvd either. even downloadin illegal copyis waste of time…

It was kinda funny though. And it must’ve looked awesome on paper. Brilliant script, but it just doesn’t work. Fair bit of killing and you almost get a glimpse of Monica Bellucci’s tits. But you don’.

Have you ever watched anyone play one of those first person shoot ’em ups? Well that’s what this is. So don’t bother. There’s a fair bit of killing and also a couple of unhealthy ways to use carrot.

It’s not that I didn’t like it. I was speechless. If I had a choice now, I’d choose the film was undone.

And I like Clive Owen. And the other… some Giamatti some guy… And tits. cool – if you are 12.

God save the Ozone layer

Have I mentioned I am a John Waters Fan? Well, A short while ago I saw this film, Hairspray. And it was just such a good film, it made me smile throughout, so much so, that my cheeks hurt like I’d been on acid for a week. probably lot less than John Waters in his life time.

This was of course the new version of Hairspray, so a lot less to do with John in all aspects. I have to re-watch the old version shortly though. The cast is brilliant, the music is perfect for a musical like this. Dancing is good, everything makes you feel happy and entertained and the film even has a message. John’s cameo was pretty funny too.

Colorful, cheerful and full of funny moments. Just what I needed that day. And John Travolta is not exactly Divine, but does the job.hairspray

1 plus 4 plus 0 plus 8

I just came from a holiday in New York, where I stayed in the Dolphin hotel… The corridor of the… hmm… 15th or 12th floor (I’ve forgotten the floor already, it’s kinda irrelevant to the holiday, except that you get a better view of the brickwall from the window of a higher floor) was a lot scarier than that of the film’s 13th floor. So if the room numbers on the 13th floor start from 1400, how about the 14th floor?

I don’t know how much of the film they actually shot in hotel Pennsylvania, probably the entrance, maybe the lobby, but that’s got to be it really… still, I felt I’d been there at the scene of the film.

Sadly, the film wasn’t that good. Stephen King has never been very lucky when it comes to films. The Shining is brilliant, so is Dolores Clairborne, I enjoyed Misery, even somehow found Maximum Overdrive funny. I can even watch Christine all the way through. But he has been quite busy writing and getting films made. The film made me think there’s enough material for a short film, but then again, if I got it right, it’s based on a SHORT story… and seems to follow the structure of a short story as well, which is good enough for a feature film I suppose, but surely you need quite a lot of content for 90 minutes of scary movie.

There’s a couple of shockers, but not really that much. Samuel L. Jackson is ok, but hasn’t got much screen time. Cusack’s performance could have been better, but there’s not much to play with. I just kept thinking that if this was on telly, I’d change the channel. Even the poster is pretty dull.1408

Sometimes even the wisest of man or machine can make an error.

I had a transformers toy about 20 years ago. I knew nothing about transformers, had never seen any comics or tv series or anything. Today I saw the film, still without any background information other than that there are these robots that transform into cars, or cars that transform into robots…

I have never really had high hopes with a Michael Bay film, but I do always expect decent action and some funny moments from him, and I was not disappointed. As a comedy it’s not that clever perhaps, but it has its fair share of one-liners and plenty of good looking action. Perhaps aimed at slightly younger audience, but I didn’t mind watching this.

From the plot you kinda get the feeling there’s a bit more story behind all the transformers’ characters, but then Mr Bay only had about 2 hours to tell us the story so I’m not complaining. Shia LaBeouf is a little bit irritating, but does a pretty good job. Megan Fox is a fox indeed.

This film makes me not want to see another movie with teenagers in it. But I would finally want to become more familiar with autobots… Maybe get my hands on the TV series or some of the other transformers films. Entertaining film, that made me smile.Transformers

A Dirty pink shamed flamingo

Ever heard of John Waters? Pink Flamingos? When I start a category for weird and wonderful, Pink Flamingos is there among the first ones.

So I am a bif of a fan. I was pleasantly surprised to find the movie not that lame. Waters has grown up a lot, but there’s still something about John. And the film is set in Baltimore, making it ever more attracting place to visit. Big names are here again, doing a great job not getting embarrassed. I read a review saying something like “if you liked Pink Flamingos, you are likely to find A Dirty Shame lacking”, which I may have to agree with, but I did like both and I am not complaining. I did find Polyester a little bit too mainstream (the first one, haven’t seen the one with John Travolta yet). But I liked Cry Baby as well. John’s touch is something quite unique, child at heart or something. Serial Mom was somewhere there as well. I will review Desperate Living as soon as I get a chance.

A Dirty Shame is all about sex addiction, that much I can say without spoiling it for you. And it is just very very funny comedy. And kind hearted. And a bit naughty. And surely not worth being censored or rated 18 or NC-17. Surely not?

oversized

this is SPARRRTAAAAAA

I was going through some images from 300 and came across a Manowar poster… There are similarities surely.

I am a Frank Miller fan. I have missed a fair bit of comics, cartoons and so on, but whenever I come across his name in graphic novels, I become interested. Sin City is brilliant, simply brilliant. Was not too impressed with the movie, I’ll get back to that later.

Because of Sin City, I had somehow associated 300 with Mr Rodriquez, so I had no problem with the apparent inconsistency and differing acting performances in this film, nor did I pay much attention to less than clever executions of pieces of script and pretty much expected only a visually stunning result.

It is really beautiful, not unlike the Gladiator momentarily here and there, but that is not a bad thing really. It’s not directed by Rodriques but some guy called Zack Snyder… Who’s he? Well I kinda liked the new version of Dawn of the Dead (shall I write a review?).

I thought leonidas is the Belgian chocolate thingy. Gerard Butler looks good as king, and mostly acts well. It’s just that some of the stuff is so funny/cheesy/tongue in cheek (IMHO). Really, I’ve not read the graphic novel, I’ll hunt it down now though.

With this one, it feels that if I say more than one word about the story, its already a spoiler, there really isn’t that much to it. But I am sure it’s better that way. Keep it simple.

So I said it’s beautiful, and it is, but here and there it still looks unfinished. I would really want to see it in IMAX, but don’t have the time.

I enjoyed this, and can understand if you do or don’t.

This one is maybe a bit superficial one, so maybe should mention that there is blood, cool fight sequances, shots that are too long and try to be emotional, good make-up stuff, some one who to me looks like he’s gay (homophobic thingy? shouldn’t homosexuality be quite common in ancient Greece… well who am I to say what/anything… please don’t tell me I’m the homophobic one… In Eric Cartman’s words: Screw you, I do what I want. And yes, I like South Park. More than Simpsons.). And some little bits of bare skin… which is pretty good achievement with a movie concentrating on war battle fields… That’s not a spoiler is is? we are talking about Spartans… Frank Miller

Richard… er… Shrek III

Shrek rules

There’s no question about it: its very, very funny. I am yet to see the second one, I did like the first too. But I think this is a bit different – the world of far far away is real never-never land. It’s out of this world. Completely. With the weirdest (greenest) looking characters being the closest to sane. John Cleese is simply amazing. He’s not there for long, but it’s just so good – so is the animation by the way.

Maybe the story isn’t that special. It’s ok and just the right type for a movie like this, but as a main meal I thought it was just ok. But the side orders, now that’s good. Shrek the Third is just filled with little diamonds that blend in nicely to the story and you’re sure to get your moneys worth. And as with any movie and especially these brilliant computer animated features, ‘It’s the experience that counts’, so watch it in the cinema.

Oh, almost forgot. it’s pretty well animated… lots of really good looking stuff there. It must be very hard to create that look of realistic yet cartoony human characters… It’s not all as good as you’d wish, but it’s ok. These things are becoming so ‘normal’ now that its becoming harder and harder to amaze (me, or anyone else for that matter).

ps. Since I seem to have made a point about Justin Timberlake with every time I get a chance, why should I let him off easily now? He’s ok… I even forgot its him while watching. The character is still similarly annoying though. So well cast I suppose.

Eddie Murphy is just funny the usual way, so nothing new there. Antonio Banderas was good as well, I quite enjoyed his bits. Mike Myers is no Austin Powers in this one, its rather serious role for him. I wasn’t too impressed with Cameron Diaz, but maybe its because Fiona’s role is not that significant in Shrek 3. She’s still always cool.

It’s not all song and dance

Went to the movies to see this one. Quite annoying with all the teenagers making noise in the back row. Turned out to be pretty nice looking movie, I like London movies anyways, I live here. It felt too much like 8 mile and childish at that though, can’t say I enjoyed too much. Felt a bit bored really. A bit like watching Eastenders. Not that I really watch Eastenders… The cast is pretty well cast for their roles, and the main guy plays his role well. And there’s a pretty girl involved as well. But there’s less flesh than in Bullet Boy, and it felt a bit softer in all other aspects as well. Though I felt Bullet Boy could have a been a little bit more mature as well about certain things. I think I should go and rent Kidulthood next…

Have I rated Kidulthood yet? hmm.. have to sort that out. Same goes for Bulletboy…

How superficial would you rate me ;). It’s the thought that counts… which reminds me, I stumbled today on a site that lists Clichés.

I think I’ll go watch Shrek 3 today. I hope I’ll like it. I did like the first. The second? I can’t remember if I’ve seen it. Probably not.

I don’t like repeating myself really, as I find it annoying when other people do it, but as good as Bulletboy and this life & lyrics is, there’s still a long way to go, but the first impression is definitely positive, keep it goint!

Life and lyrics

Being where

This one is an old one. Or maybe I’m just young. It was just on the telly and I just had to watch it. It felt almost criminal, that it was on around midnight though, whose going to watch it that late. And this one always seems to come late in the evening. Slow paced, brilliant movie… Problem is that I’ll fall asleep during the movie because it is broadcast so late. Must have been some sort of Peter Sellers day, it came straight after the movie about Peter Sellers, starring Geoffrie Rush or what’s-his-name. Which was good as well I think, but I only saw bits of that so I should just keep quiet about that. So, being there is really funny, if a little strange movie, with Peter Sellers at his best. A smile fest. Maybe not laughing out loud, but definitely smiling.Peter Sellers
